PVC-free films for pharmaceutical and medical packaging

ITP introduces a dedicated line of polyolefin films for pharmaceutical and medical packaging, developed to respond to the growing demand for safe, technically reliable and more sustainable alternatives to PVC in highly regulated applications. Thanks to over fifty years of experience in polyethylene film extrusion, ITP offers advanced solutions designed for primary pharmaceutical packaging, where material purity, process stability, and compliance are essential.

The range is manufactured using selected LDPE and PE‑based polyolefin resins and is intended for both rigid and flexible packaging applications. When required, the raw materials used can be compliant with the European Pharmacopoeia. For each product, ITP provides a specific declaration of raw‑material compliance, while testing on the final article remains the responsibility of the packaging or pharmaceutical manufacturer, in accordance with regulatory standards.

Applications for rigid pharmaceutical packaging

For blisters and suppository packaging, ITP offers a portfolio of LDPE and high‑performance PE films developed primarily as more sustainable alternatives to PVC, a material still widely used for its formability and clarity but increasingly questioned for its environmental impact.

These solutions include:

• Sustainable “PVC-free” film, mainly Polyolefin based for PVC replacement in the outer layers of blisters and suppository packaging, featuring increased thickness and rigidity suitable for forming applications.
• LDPE liner films for suppository packaging and tablet blisters, used as internal sealing layers.
• High‑performance PE films for cold‑form blisters, designed to replace PVC in PA/Alu/PVC laminated structures, offering excellent low‑temperature sealability and reliable performance during cold forming. In this application, it is important to note that the barrier function is provided by aluminum, while ITP films act as sealing or peelable layers, ensuring pack integrity, clean opening when required, and consistent processing.

Applications for flexible pharma & medical packaging

For flexible formats, ITP supplies:

• LDPE films for medical pouches and sachets, suitable for liquid or powder pharmaceuticals and optimized for vertical FFS (VFFS) lines, thanks to controlled friction and enhanced slip properties.
• LDPE peelable sealing films for Tyvek®, used for sterile medical pouches (e.g. dental and surgical instruments), ensuring sterility, moisture resistance, mechanical strength, and clean, controlled peelability, without fiber residues or “angel hair” effect. These films can also be combined with PET as the transparent outer layer.
