Cereals

Films for the Packaging of Cereals and Breakfast Products

The packaging of cereals, corn flakes, muesli and breakfast products requires materials capable of preserving product freshness, crispness and quality throughout the entire product life cycle.
For this reason, we develop flexible films for bags, pouches and doypacks, designed for high-speed packaging lines. Our range includes structures with different barrier levels and mono-material solutions, developed to help preserve the crispness, aroma and quality of the packaged product.
We continuously invest in the development of PPWR-ready packaging solutions to meet the new sustainability requirements of the food industry.

What barrier properties are required for the long-term storage of cereals?

For the long-term preservation of cereals, three main barrier properties are required: protection against moisture (to prevent swelling, mould growth and loss of crispness), protection against oxygen (to slow fat rancidity and oxidation), and protection against light, where the product is sensitive to bleaching or nutrient degradation.
ITP’s multilayer coextruded PE films meet these requirements by combining layers with different functions within the same film structure: a moisture barrier layer (a key strength of PE), optional layers containing opacifying additives or pigments for light protection, and an optimized structure designed to reduce overall permeability while maintaining a mono-material composition.
The result is a packaging that provides the required shelf life while remaining recyclable.

How can packaging recyclability be certified without compromising the barrier properties required for cereals?

ITP’s PE films, produced using blown film extrusion technology, are multilayer mono-material structures: multiple polyethylene layers coextruded into a single film, each performing a specific function (barrier, sealability, mechanical resistance).
This makes it possible to achieve excellent protection against moisture and oxygen without introducing additional polymers that would compromise recyclability.
Recyclability is ensured through protocols that assess the film structure, additives and printing inks against the thresholds permitted for the mechanical recycling of PE.
The result is a mono-PE film that protects cereals while remaining compatible with existing PE recycling streams.

How is consistent “Easy Open” (peelability) performance achieved on VFFS lines without compromising package integrity?

ITP films incorporate a special sealing layer, known as a peelable or easy-open layer, designed to open with a clean peel and a consistent opening force, rather than remaining permanently sealed. No knife or scissors are required to open the package.
Achieving the correct balance during the sealing process is essential: if the seal is too weak, the package may open during transportation; if it is too strong, the easy-open effect is lost and the package becomes difficult for consumers to open.
For this reason, ITP films are engineered to perform reliably under the normal variations in temperature and packaging machine speed, thanks to a wide sealing window, ensuring easy and consistent opening without compromising package integrity.

Cerealflex

Plastic film for cereals

An easy-open mono-film with strong sealing performance. Specifically developed for the packaging of breakfast cereals in doypacks and bags.

In the high oxygen barrier version, it prevents the oxidation of products such as nuts and chocolate, while also preventing external contaminants, including MOSH and MOAH, from coming into contact with the packaged product.

Printable using flexographic or digital printing technologies, making it ideal for short production runs.

Laminated Films

We have developed a complete range of laminated films designed to preserve food freshness for extended periods and help reduce food waste.

Our products are laminated without the use of solvents, ensuring a reduced environmental impact and greater safety for consumers.

ITP laminates perform effectively on different packaging lines. We develop and manufacture films for horizontal flow pack machines and vertical VFFS machines.

ITP produces sealable films with excellent performance even in the presence of contaminants; peelable films suitable for various substrates, including PE, PVC, APET, PS and PP; and films with barrier properties tailored to specific requirements, also available in anti-UV and anti-fog versions.

BRC CERTIFICATION

ITP is certified to the BRCGS Packaging Materials Standard with an AA+ grade, the highest rating awarded for food-contact packaging materials.

The BRCGS Packaging Materials Standard is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is one of the leading international benchmarks for packaging safety and quality.

In 2021, ITP also became the first company in the world to obtain the BRCGS Packaging Materials certification with Module 10 (Plastic Pellet Loss Prevention) with the highest possible score. This voluntary module focuses on preventing the loss of plastic pellets into the environment, in line with the principles of Operation Clean Sweep®.
