Films for Fish, Shellfish and Crustaceans Packaging

From fresh fish fillets and shellfish to processed and frozen seafood products, each application requires specific barrier, strength and processability characteristics. For this reason, we develop a comprehensive range of films for skin packaging, top lidding, resealable packs, bags and flexible packaging, available both as structures for lamination and as ready-to-use primary packaging.

Alongside high technical performance, we continuously invest in mono-material and PPWR-ready solutions to support the industry’s transition towards increasingly sustainable packaging.

Which PE film structure is best suited for seafood packaging?

For fish and seafood packaging, the most suitable solution is a high-barrier polyethylene (PE) structure, designed to provide protection against oxygen, moisture and odours, which are critical factors in preserving seafood freshness. The most commonly used formulations include multilayer coextruded PE films featuring:
an EVOH barrier layer to extend shelf life;

  • functional PE layers that ensure reliable sealing, even in the presence of moisture;
  • high transparency for improved product presentation;
  • anti-fog treatments, essential for refrigerated display applications.

ITP offers several PE film combinations specifically developed for the seafood industry, ideal for top lidding, skin pack, flow pack and MAP packagingRecyclable mono-material PE versions are also available upon request, designed to comply with the latest European circular economy requirements.

What characteristics should a PE film have for packaging lines operating in the presence of water and ice?

Effective sealing on wet surfaces. The material must ensure reliable seals even in the presence of water droplets, reducing the risk of package opening and leakage.

Mechanical resistance at low temperatures. The film must remain flexible and tear-resistant even near freezing temperatures, a typical condition in seafood processing operations.

Anti-fog properties. Essential to prevent condensation and ensure optimal product visibility in refrigerated display cabinets.

Oxygen and odour barrier. Structures incorporating EVOH improve preservation and help maintain the freshness and quality of fish products.

Smooth running and stability on automated lines. The film must operate reliably on flow pack, thermoforming and top lidding equipment, even in the presence of residual water.

What are the economic and logistical advantages of Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP) for seafood products?

VSP provides tangible benefits throughout the seafood supply chain:

  1. Longer shelf life
    Oxygen removal helps preserve freshness and colour, reducing waste and returns while improving profitability.
  2. Highly compact and stable packs
    The flat package profile facilitates stacking, storage and transportation, optimizing space utilization and reducing logistics costs.
  3. Premium shelf presentation
    The film adheres closely to the product, enhancing its shape and quality and enabling a higher-value market positioning.
  4. Reduced liquid loss
    The package retains liquids, improving hygiene and cleanliness throughout the distribution process.
  5. Versatility of use
    VSP is compatible with both trays and paperboard substrates, offering flexibility in packaging solutions.
