ITP gets Halal certification: compliant solutions for packaging

date 16 January 2026

ITP Industria Termoplastica Pavese S.p.A. has obtained Halal certification issued by Halal Italia, an accredited body for compliance with international standards (COREIS DTP HLL 02, UAE.S 2055-1, GSO 2055-1, OIC/SMIIC 1, MS 1500, MUIS SMHS, SJPH Indonesia). The certification is valid until December 22, 2028, with annual updates.

What is Halal and why does it matter for packaging?

The term Halal (Arabic: “permissible”) refers to what is allowed under Islamic law. In the food and cosmetics sectors, it means that ingredients, processes, and materials must not contain prohibited substances (haram), such as pork, alcohol, or non-compliant animal derivatives.

For Halal packaging, this translates into specific requirements:

  • Materials: No components of uncertified animal origin or alcoholic solvents in inks and adhesives.
  • Processes: Prevention of cross-contamination through dedicated lines or validated sanitization procedures.
  • Traceability: Documented control of suppliers, batches, and logistics flows.

Standards such as OIC/SMIIC 1 and UAE.S 2055-1 require audits, segregation of flows, and compliant management systems to ensure Halal integrity throughout the supply chain.

Halal Packaging by ITP: Lines and Applications

  • SG Series is the line of high-performance coextruded polyethylene monofilms, ideal for frozen food packaging. It ensures protection throughout the cold chain and delivers a premium look thanks to its white opaque finish. The films offer high stiffness, excellent sealability even at low temperatures, and customizable thicknesses. Compatible with automatic packaging lines, they combine safety with certified quality. Within the range, FreezyPeel is the innovative peelable monofilm that combines easy opening, mechanical strength, and optimal performance, ensuring accessibility and packaging integrity.
  • Paper G is ITP’s self-adhesive coextruded film designed to adhere, by thermal lamination, to paperboard or cellulose fiber supports. It combines high technical performance with sustainability and practicality. Its structure eliminates the use of glues, offers customizable adhesion, and makes separation from cardboard easy for recycling. Ideal for skin or MAP sealing, it is food-safe, microwave-compatible, and ensures mechanical strength, heat resistance, and barrier properties.
  • ClearSkinPack® is ITP’s self-adhesive coextruded film designed for vacuum skin packaging applications. Thanks to advanced technology, it adheres to the bottom without glues. The film wraps the product like a second skin, ensuring freshness without MAP, maximum protection, and a premium display that enhances visual appeal. Strong and versatile, it offers puncture and temperature resistance, making it ideal for meat, fish, ready meals, and frozen foods. A solution that combines functionality, sustainability, and appeal.
  • Triflex T-Lid is a coextruded high-barrier film designed for top lidding applications without lamination. Thanks to its advanced production technology, it offers high stiffness and toughness combined with excellent transparency and brilliance. Equipped with an antifog additive, it ensures optimal performance and food safety. Winner of the CONAI Ecopack Award 2024, T-Lid reduces raw material usage and CO₂ emissions, as demonstrated by LCA studies.

Market Impact: Food and Cosmetics

Halal certification is not limited to the food sector; it also extends to cosmetics and personal care, where compliance is increasingly demanded by consumers and regulatory authorities in Muslim-majority markets.

  • Food: In the Gulf countries (GCC), Southeast Asia, and North Africa, Halal compliance is a prerequisite for the entire supply chain, including packaging materials. Certification speeds up supplier qualification and ensures compliance with schemes such as ECAS (UAE) and GSO, reducing entry barriers.
  • Cosmetics: Packaging plays a key role in Halal certification for beauty and skincare products, as it must be free from contamination and non-compliant materials (e.g., uncertified animal derivatives, alcoholic solvents). Demand for Halal cosmetics is growing rapidly, pushing global brands to require certified packaging to guarantee integrity throughout the supply chain.

For ITP, this means strengthening its presence in high-potential markets by offering packaging solutions that respect religious and cultural standards without compromising performance and sustainability.
